For young adults and teenagers struggling to express who they are in the world, this book is an ally. It’s a fantasy, about a kid who loses his memory and the kids who try to help him find out who he is. Reverie landed on the list, along with La Sala’s Bedazzled, because the story is about a queer character. Recently, McKinney, TX mayor George Fuller responded to these activists, pointing out that no matter how much they complain, until one of them actually reads one of these books and challenges it through the district’s already in place book challenge process, all of this is political theater. They attended school meetings, reading passages of texts out of context in order to convince school boards that books containing LGBTQ characters are “pornography.” The list was published by a conservative politician, but no official challenges were made by activists. Reverie by Ryan La Sala is one of over 800 books targeted by Texas conservative activists early in the 2022 midterm election cycle.
