![]() ![]() I have a high tolerance level for flowery writing. For example, some reviewers thought that Lips Touch: Three Times was just a mess of bloated purple prose, whereas I thought it was one of the most beautiful books I read last year. ![]() I think there's a fine line in writing between the pretty and the purplish and different readers will define it in their own way. ![]() However, I was also prepared to allow myself to be surprised a lot of my friends loved this and one of the biggest criticisms didn't actually bother me - purple prose. Any so-called "dystopia" with a runway model on the front cover leaves me feeling sceptical. You're probably assuming - correctly - that I went into this book with low expectations. I originally gave Shatter Me two stars because that's my sort of kneejerk reaction to books I don't like, but after thinking it over for a while, I can't recall anything positive about it that would justify a rating of more than one star. This is not a novel, it is a collection of similes and metaphors, most of which do not make sense. ![]() ![]() ![]() The exhibit, with more than 200 images, was curated and designed by Bender and Chernack, who acknowledge that none of this would be possible without generous participation from the awkward families who so bravely sent in their photos. This work provides a detailed description of Epicurean philosophy, which encompasses theories of atoms. Though this is a work of science and philosophy, it is also a poem. It was written in the early 50s BC, in Latin. Lucretius shows that the world must be mortal by demonstrating how all of its component elements are mutable and weak (“soft,” as established in Book I) evidence that the world will collapse, since something that is made of mortal components cannot itself be immortal. On the Nature of Things is a philosophical work by the Roman author Titus Lucretius Carus (whom we call Lucretius). ![]() The main elements that make up our world are earth, water, air, and fire. The gods, therefore, did not have a hand in the world’s creation. Lucretius also reminds us that the combination of chance and time created the world: particles traveling at random were bound to create these circumstances eventually. ![]() Though this is inevitable, he does express the hope that “reasoning rather than reality convince you that the whole world may give way and collapse with a horrendous crash” (Book V, lines 108-109 page 139). Lucretius introduces his detailed cosmology by announcing that the ‘world,’ by which he means the sky, the sea, and the land, will collapse one day. ![]() ![]() ![]() Jane Jacobs - (– April 25, 2006) The author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities, Jacobs is credited with nurturing a new era of community-led planning. ![]() So, without further ado, and in the hopes of inspiring more debate, consideration, and the next generation of world changing urbanists: Planetizen's Most Influential Urbanists.ġ. As we hope this list makes obvious, urbanists are becoming more aware of the essential contributions of women and people of color throughout history and in the present, but we have a long way to go to achieve equal standing for all people in the built and natural environments. Overall, the list is far less male, and less white, than the previous version, but urbanism has been long dominated by one group. On the subject of evolution, this list includes 17 women, which is a large increase from the 2009 list's nine. There were certainly some surprises to follow, and more than a little evolution from the previous "Top Thinkers" list generated by the Planetizen audience in 2009. It probably won't surprise anyone that Jane Jacobs won this vote by a long shot, basically lapping the competition. Names on the list date back as far as 498 BCE, but there's also no shortage of contemporary thinkers, activists, planners, and designers in the final list of 100.
